How No-Gi Is Different From Gi

Gi Jiu-Jitsu uses the traditional jacket, pants and belt. Those clothes allow grips that are not available in No-Gi.

No-Gi practice instead relies on connections made with the body rather than fabric. Beginners still learn the basics of safe movement, controlled positions and partner etiquette.

Who Can Start No-Gi?

No-Gi is not reserved for competitive athletes. If you are completely new, tell the academy before attending so the team can help you choose an appropriate class.

A class may include technique demonstration, partner drilling and contact practice suited to the students and instructor. Ask about the format if you are unsure.

What Should You Wear?

No-Gi students typically wear close-fitting athletic training clothes suitable for grappling. Ask the academy what is permitted for the free trial and whether anything can be borrowed.

Avoid guessing about uniforms or buying special equipment before your first conversation with the team.

Build a Sustainable Training Routine

You can train Gi, No-Gi or both according to the academy schedule and your goals. Beginners do not need to choose a lifelong specialty before their first session.

Start by attending a class you can return to. Your instructor can help you decide how to develop your fundamentals over time.
