A Jiu-Jitsu schedule often has two labels that are not immediately obvious to a newcomer: Gi and No-Gi. They are closely related, but the training clothes change how people hold and control each other.

You do not need to choose a permanent favorite before your first class. It helps to understand what each one asks you to learn.

What is Gi Jiu-Jitsu?

Gi training uses the traditional jacket, pants, and belt. The uniform gives training partners additional grips, including the collar, sleeve, and pant leg.

Those grips can slow down a movement or make certain kinds of control possible. Beginners learn where to place their hands, how to maintain posture, and why a small adjustment matters.

A Gi class does not mean every technique depends on fabric. Balance, pressure, and positioning still do much of the work.

What happens in No-Gi training?

No-Gi practice takes away the jacket and pant grips. Students typically wear close-fitting athletic clothing made for grappling, following the academy's dress code.

Without cloth to hold, controlling a partner often depends more on body position, head placement, underhooks, and other connections that do not use the uniform.

Some exchanges can feel faster because fabric grips are not there to slow the action. That does not mean every No-Gi class is automatically harder or more advanced.

Is one format easier for a beginner?

There is no universal answer. One person likes the clear grips in the Gi. Another prefers learning without worrying about collars and sleeves.

What matters more during the first few weeks is the quality of instruction and whether you feel comfortable asking questions. A patient explanation will help you more than picking the supposedly perfect format.

Ask the coach whether a particular session is intended for beginners. Also ask what to wear and whether any equipment can be borrowed for a trial.

Can you practice both Gi and No-Gi?

Yes. Many students enjoy learning both because the two formats emphasize different ways of solving familiar problems.

At Mission Jiu Jitsu Academy, the published weekly schedule lists Gi and No-Gi sessions for adults as well as younger students. Class times may change, so consult the current schedule before choosing a date.

There is no need to buy two sets of gear immediately. The academy states that first-time visitors can attend a trial in comfortable exercise clothing and can be provided with a Gi if needed.

What should you expect from your first visit?

You will still be learning the basics: movement, safe positioning, partner etiquette, and how to listen to instructions on the mat. The uniform changes some of the details, not the purpose of a beginner lesson.

When booking, tell the team if you have a preference for Gi or No-Gi, or if you are happy to try whichever beginner-friendly class fits your schedule.

Do Gi and No-Gi have different rules?

Competition rule sets may differ depending on the tournament and division. Even without competing, beginners will notice that gripping a sleeve is possible in a Gi but not in No-Gi. The instructor explains which grips and movements belong in each class.

A beginner should not worry about learning every rule right away. First learn how to move safely, communicate with a partner, and recognize a few basic positions.

Which class should you try first in Mission Viejo?

Choose a session that fits your schedule and that the academy recommends for your experience level. If you are unsure, tell the team you are new and ask whether that day is a Gi or No-Gi class.

You can also watch the distinction in action before buying additional clothing. What matters most is whether you enjoy the instruction and can see yourself returning next week.
