This Is Not Just Another Tournament

Something unprecedented is happening in Las Vegas on August 22 and 23, 2026 — and every Jiu-Jitsu family in Southern California needs to know about it. For the first time ever, the UFC is opening the doors of its elite grappling platform to everyday athletes: beginners, youth competitors, teens, adults, and masters — all competing under the most powerful brand in combat sports history.

It's called the UFC BJJ Opens, and it is the official entry point into the UFC BJJ competitive system. This is not just a local tournament with a flashy name. This is the beginning of a structured national pathway that could one day lead your child — or you — all the way to a UFC BJJ world title.

"Our goal is to build a system where competitors can start locally, develop through real competition experience, and ultimately see a path toward the highest level of professional grappling at UFC BJJ."

— Claudia Gadelha, UFC BJJ Senior Director of Jiu-Jitsu Strategy

At Gracie Mission Viejo, this is the moment we have been waiting for. Under the guidance of 6th Degree Black Belt Professor Marcelo "Bob" Lucena, our students — kids, teens, and adults alike — have been training for exactly this kind of stage. The UFC BJJ Opens is Las Vegas. It is August 22 and 23. And registration is open right now.

What Is the UFC BJJ Opens?

The UFC BJJ Opens is a brand-new tournament series launched by UFC BJJ in May 2026 — the official amateur competition arm of the most exciting grappling promotion on the planet. Think of it as the grassroots foundation of the UFC BJJ ecosystem: where champions are discovered before they reach the professional stage.

The rules are designed to reward aggression and finishing — a slightly adjusted format from traditional Jiu-Jitsu tournaments that mirrors what fans see at professional UFC BJJ events. That means more action, more offense, and more excitement. Youth competitors and lower belts receive multiple-match formats for maximum mat time, while advanced belts compete in single-elimination brackets — with cash prizes on the line for the top divisions.

Most importantly: absolute divisions are earned, not purchased. This is a competition that respects the integrity of the sport and rewards those who perform.

Why Jiu-Jitsu Is the Greatest Gift You Can Give a Young Person

Before we talk about the competition, let's talk about what brings a child to the mat in the first place — and what keeps them there for life. The UFC BJJ Opens is an incredible milestone, but it is built on something far deeper: the daily transformation that happens inside every Jiu-Jitsu academy, including ours.

🧠

Mental Sharpness & Problem-Solving

Every roll is a live chess match. Kids learn to think under pressure, read opponents, and make decisions in real time — skills that go far beyond the mat and into every classroom and life challenge they face.

🛡️

Confidence & Anti-Bullying

A young person who understands Jiu-Jitsu carries themselves differently. That quiet self-assurance — knowing they can handle themselves — makes them far less likely to be targeted or to feel powerless in difficult social situations.

❤️

Emotional Resilience

In Jiu-Jitsu, tapping is not losing — it is learning. Over time, children develop a healthy relationship with failure, frustration, and setbacks that shapes their emotional intelligence for life.

🤝

Discipline & Respect

The culture of the mat is one of the last places where young people are truly taught respect — for their instructor, their training partners, and the art itself. These values do not stay at the gym door.

💪

Physical Fitness

In a world of screens and sedentary habits, Jiu-Jitsu pulls children into their bodies in the most complete way possible — building strength, coordination, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness while having genuine fun.

🌐

A Global Brotherhood

Jiu-Jitsu is practiced in every country on earth. The UFC BJJ Opens — with athletes registered from over 10 countries — is proof that your child is joining something far bigger than a local sport. They are joining a world.

A Real Pathway to the Top

What makes the UFC BJJ Opens different from every other tournament your child has entered is the destination it points to. This is not a dead-end competition. It is step one of a structured journey that, for the most talented and dedicated athletes, leads all the way to the professional UFC BJJ stage.

03

Get Noticed by UFC BJJ

Advanced division performances are seen by the UFC BJJ organization. Top athletes can earn the attention needed to be considered for the professional platform.

04

Chase a World Title

The UFC BJJ Opens series is designed with one singular goal: to find the next generation of champions. That journey starts in Las Vegas this August.

The Window Is Open — Don't Miss It

The UFC does not do things small. When they launched UFC BJJ in June 2025, they committed an eight-figure investment to growing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into a mainstream global sport. The UFC BJJ Opens is the next step in that vision — and it is happening in Las Vegas, just a short drive from Mission Viejo, on August 22 and 23.

Spots are limited. Athletes from more than 10 countries are already registered. This is not a wait-and-see situation. If you have a child, a teenager, or an adult student who has ever dreamed of competing under the UFC banner, the moment has arrived.

"The kids training today are the champions of tomorrow — and tomorrow has never looked this close."

— Gracie Mission Viejo
