From Maeda To Mission Viejo: The Gracie Lineage That Reached Southern California
There is a difference between learning a martial art and inheriting a tradition. At Mission Jiu Jitsu Academy, that difference has a name, a family and more than a hundred years of history behind it.
A Lineage That Crossed Generations
It all started with Mitsuyo Maeda, the Japanese master who brought Jiu-Jitsu to Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century. From there, the art passed through the hands of Carlos Gracie and Helio Gracie, and continued with Carlos Gracie Jr. — who personally promoted Professor Marcelo "Bob" Lucena from white belt all the way to black belt. Today Professor Bob is a 6th-degree black belt, born and raised in the birthplace of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and leading Mission Jiu Jitsu Academy.

This is not a gym that decided to teach Jiu-Jitsu. It is the continuation of a lineage carrying decades of technical refinement, handed from teacher to student, generation after generation — and today it has a permanent address in Mission Viejo, on Trabuco Road.
30+ Years On The Mats, One Simple Philosophy
Professor Bob has more than 30 years on the mats and multiple IBJJF titles, from adult through master divisions. But what holds the academy together isn't the competitive résumé — it's a simple idea, repeated like a founding principle: teach an extremely effective martial art, and have fun doing it.

A Community That Grows — And Competes
Students from across south Orange County have found a place here to train seriously. The academy has built disciplined practitioners at every belt and age, and our competition team has already stood on the podium at events like the UFC BJJ Opens in Las Vegas and the NABJJ Federation, with kids, teens and adults representing the academy. In September, the team heads to the IBJJF Long Beach Open — another chapter in a story still being written.
Recognition has come from off the mats too: the academy was voted Best of Mission Viejo 2026, with a perfect 5.0 rating on Google reviews.
